9 Tips for Creating Connectivity in the Workplace

Although good relationships represent a significant component of workplace connectivity, true connectivity dives deeper. A truly connected workplace is engaged and collaborative. Employees are on board with the organization's direction, common goals, and core values. Mutual trust and open communication remain integral to daily activity and workflow. Each system, team, and employee works together rhythmically as everyone does his part before passing the baton to the next player. A connected company runs like a well-oiled machine. And while no company is perfect, company connectivity isn't a pie-in-the-sky dream. It is an achievable vision.

Connectivity starts from the top down. As a leader in your company, "setting the tone" and establishing and maintaining a culture of connectivity falls on your shoulders.

Make Your Core Values a Cornerstone

Your organization's core values are foundational; they tie everything and everyone together. While employees may differ on many subjects, everyone must remain unified on core values. Remember that as a

leader in your company, you exemplify the core values daily—both on and off the job. Instill core values deep into the culture by covering them in training, discussing them often, and practicing them openly. Your employees must comprehend and believe in the core values before genuinely embracing them.

Be Transparent

Transparency is necessary for authentic connectedness. Transparency in the workplace means honesty about your decisions, growth goals, and even your weaknesses. Forthrightness garners trust and allows employees to be equally transparent and connected.

Prioritize Engagement

Invest in your employees. Take time to get to know them. Spend time in open-ended dialogue, learning about them and showing genuine interest. As you intentionally build relationships, you will inspire greater degrees of loyalty and a stronger work ethic amongst your staff. Create opportunities for them to foster strong relationships with one another, as well.

Show Recognition and Respect

Respect your employees' talents by giving them work that suits their strengths and skill sets while challenging them to improve, grow, and learn new skills. Working a job that fights your natural gifts is like swimming upstream, making it easier to disengage and disconnect from the company. Recognition is also a form of respect and gratitude, and it's important to employees.

Ask for Input and Feedback

Ask your team how you can be a better leader. Seek their feedback regarding new systems and procedures. Routinely ask where they see room for improvement. Involve them in planning and decision-making. Give them a voice during team meetings, making sure to listen actively. Employees are more likely to remain engaged when they help create.

Encourage Mentorships

Cultivate connectivity by establishing peer and cross-level mentorship programs. Mentorship programs nurture support, reinforce training, and help build bridges across different generations.

Encourage Collaboration

Proper connectivity is impossible when different teams and departments get so focused on their roles that they overlook other team members' contributions. Encourage deeper collaboration between departments by providing cross-department presentations to help everyone learn about company-wide processes.

Empower People

Empower your employees with appropriate levels of autonomy. Give them the dignity of trusting them and resisting the temptation to micromanage. Also, empower them with the training and the tools they need to do their jobs well!

Keep Communication Open

Keep your communication channels open. Establish individual and team meetings weekly to ensure everyone is on the same page. For all connectivity purposes, company communication must remain consistent and open.
