How to Have A Happier Attitude At Work

If you’re like most people, once in a while, you’ll catch yourself feeling unhappy at work.

Sure, there’s a lot to complain about at most jobs, but do you really want to be negative all the time? Probably not.

Finding yourself in a bad mood is not only upsetting, but it’s also bad for your health and productivity. While you might think a little complaining is benign, holding on to a bad frame of mind can start to affect your ability to collaborate, get help when needed and stay focused. A study from Columbia University discovered that salespeople with good attitudes performed far better than their negative colleagues.

If you don’t want your attitude to affect your job, it’s critical to take steps to improve your mood. The following steps demonstrate how keeping a positive frame of mind at work can help make your weekdays more pleasant and productive.

Connect with Co-Workers on a Personal Level

Even though you may have a lot of friends outside work, maintaining good relationships at work can support your mood. Surveys have shown workers who report good relationships with their co-workers are more engaged and satisfied with their job.

Take Short, Regular Breaks

Research has also shown that short breaks about every hour or so leads to much higher productivity than taking just a few longer breaks. These breaks should be an opportunity for you to hit the mental refresh button and enjoy a cup of coffee or a laugh with a co-worker.

Avoid Making Disagreements Personal

Have you ever been in an argument with someone and crossed the line by making it personal? Oftentimes, you probably ended up regretting it.

Every workplace has disagreements and companies benefit from healthy conflict. However, making things personal during an argument can create an on-going awkward situation or even an on-going feud, neither of which are good for your mood.

Set Goals

Sometimes, a little self-motivation is all it takes to make you feel better about your current situation. When you have attainable goals that you want to achieve, it can inspire you to work harder and be more optimistic. As you take steps toward your goals, it gives you a sense of accomplishment and encourages you to keep going.

Pay It Forward

Performing random acts of kindness is a good way to butter up your co-workers, but doing favors for others can also make you feel good about yourself. Studies have shown those who perform weekly random acts of kindness report feeling happier than those who do not.

Get Enough Sleep at Night

It’s difficult to maintain positivity when you’re operating on too little sleep. Insufficient sleep can only cause you to be more stressed and anxious, but it can even impact your work performance, resulting in a vicious cycle of fatigue and frustration.
