5 Reasons to Consider a Temp Job (Especially During COVID)

One of the knock-on effects of COVID-19 has been massive layoffs, furloughs, and terminations in almost every industry.

While some people have seen their jobs temporarily on hold while businesses wait for regular operations to resume, other workers are in high demand because they are part of essential services.

Companies in industries deemed “essential” need extra hands on deck to support overburdened systems, and in a time when people are struggling to make ends meet, temporary work can help to bridge financial and career gaps.

If you are considering temporary work right now, consider the following five reasons.

1) Keep Getting Unemployment Benefits

Temporary work will not instantly disqualify someone from receiving unemployment benefits. Working a few days per week only cuts down on the amount of weekly benefits someone is able to receive from their state. Moreover, someone working a couple days per week is still qualified for any additional federal unemployment benefits.

2) Choice of Working Environments

Whether it feels right to take a temporary job depends on someone’s individual situation. For some people, it doesn’t make sense to risk exposure to the virus or make arrangements for childcare just to earn a few bucks.

Those that choose temporary work do have options when it comes to selecting their working environment. People worried about exposure to the virus, for instance, can look for socially distanced work that is done outside or in a well-ventilated area. Also, those with small children can look for jobs that help them meet their childcare needs.

3) Companies are Supporting Safety

Those who work an in-person job don’t have to fend for themselves. Businesses are supplying employees with masks, gloves and hand sanitizer. Some organizations are also providing 14 days of monetary assistance to employees who are diagnosed with COVID-19 or are put into quarantine.

Given the added difficulties associated with the pandemic, some businesses have temporarily relaxed their performance criteria for workers.

4) Good Pay

Desperate for workers, many companies in shipping and other industries that have been overburdened by the pandemic are offering higher than normal pay. This presents an opportunity for job seekers: They can work fewer hours and still earn good money.

Unemployed individuals looking to take advantage of higher pay and pick up a few days of temporary work should consider how the money they would earn will affect any unemployment benefits they are receiving.

5) Maintain Career Momentum

With all the things going on right now, one of the last things you should be worried about is your career status. Most employers will also give future job seekers ‘a pass’ for being furloughed or unemployed during a global pandemic.

That said, if you are unemployed but otherwise in a safe, secure position – you should give some thought to your career momentum. A temporary job can help you maintain momentum and keep your brain in work mode.
