6 Tips to Keep You & Your Loved Ones Safe While Working During COVID-19

COVID-19 has cofounded many experts, and this has made giving sound public health advice very difficult. Some recommendations that were given at the outset of the pandemic are now seen as overly cautious.

Of course, it’s well within your rights to be overly cautious, but your preventative actions should be based in science and sustainable for the long haul. Lockdown fatigue is real, and a good defense against it is sticking to a few things that are believed to work – social distancing, handwashing, good ventilation, and mask-wearing.

Below are more specific ways you can keep yourself and your family safe as you work through these unprecedented times.

1) Avoid At-Risk Loved Ones

Data have shown that those with diabetes and cardiovascular issues, as well as those with advanced age, are at high risk when it comes to COVID-19.

Where possible, you should limit their contact with anyone who falls into one of these at-risk categories. If you live with an at-risk individual and relocating them is not an option, provide them with their own part of the residence and limit your contact as much as possible. Then, have this person talk to their doctor for the latest guidance on how they can best protect themselves while they live with you.

2) Avoid Public Transportation

If you rely on public transportation to get to work and don’t have another option, you must get creative with social distancing.

If possible, flex the start and end of your workday so as to avoid rush hours. Try to keep 6 feet of distance between yourself and other riders. Avoid touching any surfaces on public transit vehicles. Use hand sanitizer often and wash your hands once you get to your destination.

3) Ensure Adequate Ventilation

Experts now say high, turbulent airflow appears to significantly mitigate the spread of COVID-19.

When possible, open windows and doors to ensure a constant flow of fresh air around you and others. Avoid creating a directional airflow that could carry the virus from person to person. Fans, heating, and cooling can help with airflow, but a constant supply of fresh air helps to prevent dangerously high concentrations of viral particles.

4) Socially Distance from Others at Work

Your employer has likely limited room occupancy in its facilities and even in this limited occupancy, you should maintain 6 feet between yourself and others.

5) Wash Hands Regularly

Both at work and at home, encourage everyone around you to regularly wash their hands with soap and hot water for 20 seconds at a time. As you may have heard by now, a good way to time 20 seconds is to sing the “Happy Birthday” song twice.

6) Wear a Mask Properly

If you are working in a situation that calls for mask-wearing, you should make sure your mask-wearing habits are correct, as even the best mask is useless against COVID-19 if it is dirty or worn improperly.

Ensure your mask fits snugly so that it covers your nose, mouth, and chin. If you wear reusable masks, use a freshly cleaned one for every workday. If you wear disposable masks, dispose of each mask at the end of your workday.
