These Productivity Tips Will Help Improve Your Performance

Time is the most precious commodity in the world because it is in relatively short supply.

You only get so much time in your days and weeks to accomplish what you have set out to do. This is why productivity is so essential: High productivity means you’re getting the most return out of your time investments.

Unfortunately, a number of the things we do to try to boost our productivity are a bit misguided. Below is a shortlist of proven steps you can take to support your productivity.

Take More Breaks

It sounds counterintuitive, but research backs up the connection between taking many short breaks and higher productivity, as opposed to skipping coffee breaks and lunch breaks.

Our minds and bodies are made to only be productive in short blocks. If you are working for 8 hours straight, you might feel very productive at the end of the day, but data shows that you would be more effective if you had taken little breaks to refresh mentally and physically.

Get into the habit of taking breaks every 45 minutes to an hour, and you’ll see your productivity pick up.

Don’t Let Procrastination Win

From putting off a big project to making a million minor changes before submitting work for review, procrastination can take many forms. As you might expect, research shows that procrastination is associated with lower quality work.

The risks of procrastination may seem pretty apparent, but many people still can’t get out of the habit of constantly putting things off. One basic approach to beating back procrastination is to break tasks down into small pieces. The thinking is that it’s easier to get started if you’re not intimidated by the scale of seemingly big projects.

Get Enough Sleep

Most of us don’t get enough sleep and that it is unfortunate because there is a strong connection between sleep deficiency and lower productivity. When you show up to work feeling exhausted and struggling to maintain your focus, you aren’t as productive as you could be.

Avoiding too much alcohol and caffeine is a good first step towards getting enough sleep. You should also be exercising regularly and keeping a schedule that is conducive to a good night’s sleep. If you do you have good habits but still can’t get enough sleep, you may want to consult your physician.

Get Help

Many of us think it’s best if we can handle our responsibilities all by ourselves. However, you must be a strong self-motivator to remain on task better than you would in a partnership. One study discovered that collaboration can create inspiration, and even turn work into play.

Always be on the lookout for opportunities to collaborate. Help out others, and it will be easier to ask for help when you need it.
