Are You Being Overworked in Your Managerial Role?

As a manager, you are going to get more than your fair share of responsibilities and the stress that comes with them.

However, if you’re feeling constantly overworked and stressed out, you shouldn’t be expected just live it with as a condition of your position.

Stress is a normal response that helps us deal with the challenges and threats that life hands us, but studies show that constant stress all the time can cause severe mental and physical damage. In order to maintain your well-being, you should be on the lookout for the following signs of being stressed out and over worked.

You’ve got a short fuse

Being a great manager means you have to be mentally and emotionally open to people at your job. But when you’re stressed out, you’ve got less to offer, and this increases the odds of getting snippy with others.

Look back at the times when you got angry with someone, and try to honestly determine if you would have had the same response if you had less stress in your life.

Your work is slipping

With so much to think about, you’re likely to forget stuff every now and then. But when you’re under a lot of stress, it’s difficult to concentrate and your short-term memory suddenly starts becoming unreliable. If you’re suddenly forgetting deadlines, meetings and other appointments, it might be time to see if your schedule is overstuffed.

You’re always looking to the future

Are you continuously saying to yourself that things will get improve next week, next month or next year? This might be a kind of denial that you engage in to avoid the reality that you are being overworked. When we are stressed out, it can be difficult to really think about our current circumstances and take action to do something about them. Instead, we attempt to soothe ourselves by thinking if we wait long enough, things will get better without any action at all.

If you’re always looking ahead to the future because the present is too stressful, try to think of steps you can take to make ‘right now’ a little better.

You’re always exhausted

Supervising a team might be strenuous, but it can also be extremely invigorating when everything is going well. Having said that, it is one thing to work hard, but it’s something completely different when you’re wiped out all the time. If you’re being overworked, you may have trouble falling or staying asleep. Some people who are overworked even report sleeping 8 or 9 hours a night and still not feeling totally rested.

If you’re constantly tired, and you feel like you have been getting enough sleep, it may be time to start looking at how you’ve been spending time during the day.

One reason managers often becoming overworked is not having enough staff around them. If your high stress levels are being caused by staffing issues, contact our team of experts today to find out how we can help!
