4 Morning Rituals to Help You Tackle Any Obstacle in Your Workday

On cold February mornings, it can be hard to roll out of bed, check your smartphone, get something to eat, and possibly hit the gym before going to work.

However, an effective morning routine has been shown to, more often than not, lead to an effective day. Some morning habits, like avoiding the snooze button, are a good thing to do. While habits like skipping breakfast and checking emails can be counterproductive.

Of course, you need to establish a routine that works for you, but if you think your routine needs a bit of tweaking, consider checking out the suggestions below.

You ‘Snooze’, You Lose

Some people are in the habit of setting their alarm early and then hitting the snooze button a few times until they have to get up.

While it can feel great to whack that snooze button and trick yourself into thinking you are getting a little treat of some extra sleep, it’s actually a bad habit to get into. Research has shown sleep after hitting a snooze button is pretty low quality. Studies have also shown snoozing can lead to increased grogginess throughout the day.

Experts suggest that rather than riding the snooze button in the morning, you should set your alarm for later and just get up when it goes off. This leads to more productive, high-quality sleep.

Put Off Unnecessary Device Time

Rolling over to grab your phone off the nightstand and check your emails or social media feeds in the morning can feel like you’re getting those things out of the way early, so you can move on to thinking about solutions for the day’s problems.

However, keeping your phone or electronic device bedside has been connected to sleep problems. Furthermore, when you get up and check your work emails, it can lead to increased anxiety and higher stress levels.

Avoid keeping your phone or device near the bed. If you have to, don’t start flipping through your apps until you’re at least out the front door in the morning. Instead of screen time, you should be having Zen time if you live alone or social time if you live with others.

Eat Breakfast

You’ve been hearing about the benefits of a well-balanced breakfast for a reason; It leads to better overall health.

If you’re short on time in the morning, pick a few healthy, high-protein options to power your body up for the day. If you’re going with a nutrition bar, be sure to pay attention to how much sugar is in it, as many “health bars” are loaded with too much sugar.

Don’t Sacrifice Sleep for the Gym

While a regular fitness routine is a good thing, it shouldn’t get in the way of getting a full night’s sleep. Over time, a lack of sleep wipe out a lot of the health benefits you get from regularly working out.
