How to Reduce Holiday Stress at Work and at Home

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, but that doesn’t mean it can’t also get stressful from time to time.

Between the shopping, party hosting and short staffing at work, the holiday season can get stressful in a hurry as we look after others and their responsibilities.

It is important you look after yourself well before helping these you around you. A good way to take care of yourself and make the most of the rest of 2016 is to celebrate life and the achievements you’ve reached in the past year.

Celebrate you

Take time every day to identify the positive things around you. This helps your brain be more positive and on the lookout for the good in life, as opposed to the bad. Research has shown when people are asked to write down three positive things for 21 days, it boosted the volunteers’ productivity and perspective. It takes the same amount of energy to think positively as it does to get caught in the ditch of negativity.

Stay active

Exercise leads to the production of dopamine, a neurotransmitter said to enhance your brain’s activity and make you feel great. Taking a regular walk or working out each day will excite your brain and give you more joyful and healthier thoughts. Developing this new exercise routine is free and just requires your time and energy. Just set aside 30 minutes per day to incorporate an activity that gets the blood flowing. In addition to stimulating your brain, you may discover you have more energy, as well.

Ditch your device

Browsing and chatting on social media can be entertaining, but it can also be stressful, particularly with today’s hotly debated political issues. Take a break from technology by switching off notifications on your phone and letting your connections know you’re taking a break from social media. You will not only feel better, you’ll probably get some support as well, as many people don’t hold out from their electronic devices for very long.

With your newly found free time, there are numerous things you can do, like regular exercise or meditation. When you step away from social media, you can focus on the issues that are right in front of you. With our busy lives, being constantly on the go, you need a solid timeout once in a while.

Give thanks

Expressing your gratitude to others doesn’t require much time or energy, but these acts of kindness are like small gifts. Giving thanks can go a long way to building self-assurance in others and these gestures are greatly appreciated. In addition to making you feel more connected to others, showing your appreciation is also a subtle way to flex leadership skills by encouraging those around you to work hard every day.
