How to Always Be Ready for a New Job

Despite how long you might have been with your current employer or how happy you might be, if an opportunity comes along that is a lot more interesting and at the right pay level, you should be ready to consider and apply for it.

Also, if the situation at your workplace suddenly changes for the worse or you suddenly become unemployed – it’s better to have laid the groundwork for a job search instead of having to start from scratch.

With that in mind, consider the following ways you can always be ready for a new job.

Take advantage of job alerts

If you’re working a full-time job and have a full personal life, you probably don’t have a lot of time leftover for searching job boards. Job alerts are a great way to keep abreast of job openings that are relevant to you and signing up for them doesn’t take much of your time.

Many general employment websites and industry-specific sites have job alerts you can sign up for by simply filling out a web form. These forms usually ask for the industry and type of job for which you want to be alerted.

Once you’ve signed up for job alerts that contact you only for your ideal opportunities, you’ve essentially automated your job search.

Make yourself more valuable

One of the best ways to access new career opportunities is to acquire new job skills. Gaining new skills can make you qualified for a wider range of jobs. Also, classes and trainings sessions are networking opportunities where you can find out about new career possibilities from trainers or attendees.

If you’re looking to gain new job skills, check with your employer to see what they can offer.

Customize your resume(s)

No two jobs are the same, and the resumes you submit to two different jobs shouldn’t be either. Because each kind of job has different requirements, you should develop several different versions of your resume for each kind of job you want to apply to.

To figure out how to correctly customize your resume to a job, read the job description to see what types of job-specific keywords are used and what principles are important. Then, write a version of your resume that reflects these keywords and principles.

Put your achievements into writing

Working hard all day can take a lot out of you, but regardless of how tried you might be at the end of the day or how happy you are at work, it’s important to track your work and major achievements. When you keep a record of your accomplishments and contributions, it not only allows you to gain perspective on your career, it also help you to stay ready for contact from a potential employer or a job alert for a dream opportunity popping up in your inbox.
